Mix Media 101 |
BANG by GISELLE SILVESTRI
Giselle's work is a powerful showcase of today's mass media and popular
culture in all it's glory. Nothing is too taboo for Giselle as she reacts
to world events, politics, good versus evil and other serious topics.
By adding a touch of humour, Giselle's mix-media pieces also illustrate
her own life experiences through the use of vintage and pop imagery.
art101 is proud to be a part of Giselle's new life as an independent artist.
For Giselle, the transition from commercial work to her personal work
has been painless and very fulfilling. Running a mural company for the
past 17 years has created such a great foundation from which she now draws
from daily. The freedom from constraints imposed by commercial clients
has allowed her to tackle any subject matter without reservation. There
is no lack of subject matter for Giselle to "talk about".

artist statement
I continuously investigate the age old struggle of good versus evil,
rich versus poor and east versus west.
Through the use of mass media, I find inspiration. I use popular images
both new and old to address serious topics, sometimes adding a touch of
humour.
Using vintage images, I illustrate life as I see it :
over processed, over indulged, overfed shiny plastic western society versus
the rest of the world.
The use of easily recognisable nostalgic images are soothing while broaching
what can be dark or controversial subject matters.
Western society is viewed by many as evil because of it’s affluence
and decadence. At the same time, the west is also revered as the place
to be and it monetary rewards are goals to achieve.
Even though the media points us eastward and westward, we need not necessarily
look further than within ourselves for the conflict that is created by
the idealistic ‘pursuit of happiness’.
